Bushbuck Trail - About 12km (6hrs)

Fairly strenuous

The trail starts with a steep mountain climb of about 3km during which you will climb more or less 550m to the top of the "Nou Nek" Peak.  On a clear day, one can see St Croix Island in the Bay from the summit.  Proteas, Cycads and mountain fynbos are to be seen and admired on this section.

You then descend 290m over the next 2km to the valley floor.  Once in the valley you "boulder hop" down the clear mountain stream until you reach Crystal Pool where a refreshing dip is in order.  This section of the trail winds through beautiful indigenous forest with yellow wood trees etc.  Knysna Louries are sometimes seen.  After your swim at Crystal Pool you scramble down to The Barn.

back

Crystal Pool Trail - 4km (3hrs)

Easy

This is a shortened version of the Bushbuck Trail.  1km up the trail to "Nou Nek" peak, you turn off and descend down a cliff-hugging trail to the valley floor.  This section is shaded by indigenous forest.  Enjoy your swim at Crystal Pool, climb the "devil's staircase" and make your way back to The Barn.

back

Copper Mine Trail - 8km (4hrs)

Moderate

Don't forget your water bottle on this one in summer!  This trail winds its way through some spectacular valley bushveld.  It tops out at Copper Kop (370 m) where, exploratory shafts were sunk by "old timer" prospectors more than a hundred years ago.  Needless to say they did not discover their "eldorado"!  From the top of Copper Kop you drop steeply down Ratekloof, which leads you down to the Elands River from where you can stroll on back to The barn for a well earned sundowner.

Leopard Trail - 6km (3hrs)

Easy

This is an easy trail which winds in and out of the mountain kloofs before following the Elands River back to The Barn.  Fynbos indigenous forest and valley bushveld are the main veld tyupes that one passes through.  Beautiful olivewood and milkwood trees are to be seen, and if you look carefully you will see the scratch marks left by the leopard on the trees in Tierkloof.  This trail is ideal for older people, young children and the "unfit types".  Help is near at hand and there are a number of "easy out" shortcuts back to The Barn for those that have had enough.

back

Guided Wilderness Trail - 20-35km

Strenuous

Two Guided Wilderness trails are available for the more adventurous.  The Rocky Valley route and Moordenaarskop Route can be combined into two or three day outdoor adventures.  Real outdoor stuff.  Roughing it under the stars at night.  Rates on request.

back

River Ramble - 1-3km (1hr)

Level and easy

For those who stay behind at the farm - Grandpa or Mom & toddlers.  Ramble around the farm area under the trees on the riverbank.

back

Eco Trail

Easy

Why not enjoy a guided eco education trail.  Educational notes are provided and you will learn about indigenous trees, alien vegetation, fossils, geology of the area, animal spoors and even the stars of the night sky (weather permitting).  Rates on request.
